Hello everyone! Welcome back to our podcast. Today, we’re talking about springtime and what it’s like in Taiwan and Philadelphia, my hometown in the US!

In Taiwan, spring is warm and rainy. The weather gets hotter in April and May. Cherry blossoms bloom, and many people go hiking or visit night markets. Spring is also the time for Qingming Festival, when families clean graves and have picnics. People eat spring bamboo shoots and fresh strawberries.

In Philadelphia, spring starts cold in March but gets warmer in April and May. People enjoy cherry blossoms at festivals and watch baseball games. Spring is also when Easter happens, with egg hunts and chocolate bunnies. Instead of night markets, people go to farmers' markets to buy fresh food.

Both Taiwan and Philadelphia have beautiful flowers, fun activities, and delicious food in spring. But Taiwan is hotter and rainier, while Philadelphia is cooler with different holidays.

What’s your favorite part of spring? Let me know! Thanks for listening. See you next time!

Hello and welcome back to our English listening podcast! Today I want to tell you about Black History Month. This is a time to learn about important Black people and their achievements. Let’s begin!

Black History Month is in February in the U.S. and Canada. It was started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. It became a full month in 1976. It is a time to learn about Black people’s contributions to history, science, music, and more.

Let’s learn about some famous Black people that are often celebrated during Black history month. First we have Harriet Tubman, who helped people escape slavery in the 1800s. Martin Luther King Jr. is important because he spoke about equal rights for all people. Rosa Parks, who was friends with Martin Luther King Jr., stood up for fair treatment on public buses. And finally, Barack Obama who was the first Black U.S. president.

So, how do we celebrate Black History month? We celebrate by listening to music by Black artists, reading stories about Black history and watching videos about Black culture. Thanks for listening! See you next time!

外籍英文老師 Bobbie Alicea 分享- New Year’s resolutions 新希望

Hello, everyone! Welcome to our final podcast of the semester. Can you believe it? We made it! Today, we’re talking about New Year’s resolutions. A New Year’s resolution is a goal for the new year to improve ourselves or try something new. For example, people might decide to exercise more or learn a new skill.

My goals for next year are to learn more Chinese, read a book every month, and exercise more. Now, think about your own goals. Maybe you want to try a new hobby or get better at something like sports or English. Try setting one small goal and one big goal. For example, reading one book in English or writing your own story in English.

Write down your goals and share them with a friend or family member. Sharing can help you stay motivated.

Thank you for listening this semester. Let’s make the new year amazing together! Bye for now, and Happy New Year! See you in 2025!

Q1. When does Kwanzaa start and end?

Q2. What is the special candle holder used during Kwanzaa called?

Q3. Which of the following is a meaning of one of the Kwanzaa candles?

Q4. What is Kwanzaa mainly about?

Q5.  What do families often do during Kwanzaa?

Hello, everyone!

This week, I want to talk about holidays. December is a special month. Many people celebrate Christmas. Some celebrate Hanukkah, and some, like me, celebrate Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa is an African American holiday. It starts on December 26 and ends on January 1. Kwanzaa is about family, community, and culture.

For Kwanzaa, we light candles every day. The candles are on a special holder called a kinara. Each candle has a meaning. One candle means unity, which is working together. Another means creativity, which is making new things. My favorite is purpose. Purpose means knowing why you are here and doing something good.

During Kwanzaa, families spend time together. They eat food, tell stories, and sometimes give small gifts. Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, so anyone can celebrate it!

What holidays do you celebrate? Do you have special food or traditions? I would love to know more about them!

Thank you for listening! See you next time!

New Year’s Day

Q1. When do people in many Western countries celebrate New Year’s Day?

Q2. What food is commonly eaten during Thanksgiving in the United States?

Q3. On what date is Christmas celebrated?

Q4. How long does Kwanzaa last?

Q5. What is one of the special ideas celebrated during Kwanzaa?

The end of the year is coming soon! In many western countries, people celebrate New Year’s Day on January 1st. But before New Year’s, there are other big holidays to enjoy. Thanksgiving is a holiday in the United States. It is on the last Thursday in November. On this day, people spend time with family and friends. They eat a big meal, called a feast, with foods like turkey, potatoes, and pumpkin pie. People also take time to say what they are thankful for.

Another holiday is Christmas, on December 25th. Many people decorate their homes with lights and trees, exchange gifts, and spend time with loved ones. I also celebrate Kwanzaa, an African-American holiday that lasts from December 26th to January 1st.

Kwanzaa honors African culture and traditions. It has seven special ideas, like unity, faith, and creativity. Each day, families light a candle and talk about these ideas. People may also share stories, play music, and enjoy a feast together. Kwanzaa is about family, community, and hope for the future. Do you celebrate any special holidays at the end of the year?

For 7th grade, I teach two classes of listening comprehension with Teacher Jenny, and a scouting class with Teacher Annie. In the US, we don’t have a scouting class, so I had to learn about this kind of class. For 8th grade, I teach the computer information class with Teacher Yang. When I was in junior high school, we had a computer class but it focused on teaching us how to type. Even now, I can type pretty fast! For the 9th grade classes, I teach music with Teacher Chunmao. In this class, I introduce students to music from all over the world. So far, I have introduced them to reggae, rock and my favorite artist, Stevie Wonder. I also showed them a song my younger brother made for mothers’ day! Although I have only been teaching at Sijhou for a little over a month, I have really enjoyed my time. Thanks for listening, and I’ll share more next week!

Hello, my name is Bobbie Alicea. I am the new ETA at Sijhou Junior High School. ETA is short for English teaching assistant. I come from a city called Philadelphia in the United States. Philadelphia is close to New York City. This is my first time in Taiwan. Taiwanese people are very kind, but the weather is too hot! While in Taiwan, I want to visit places like Yilan, Kaoshiung and Lanyu. I also want to learn how to speak Taiwanese. In America, only a few people know about Taiwan, even though bubble tea is popular there. I think Americans would enjoy the Taiwanese night markets because there are a lot of tasty foods there. Another thing that surprised me about Taiwan are the scooters. There are so many! In America, we rarely use scooters but I think they are convenient in Taiwan. Thank you for listening, I’ll share more next week!
